In his 1859 piece, “On Liberty,” John Stuart Mill wrote that the only reason that one could interfere with the liberties of any other individual, was for the principal of self-protection, and “that the only purpose for which power can be rightfully exercised over any member of a civilized community, against his will, is to prevent harm to others.”
